Inclement Weather Message for Families

There are times in Niagara when weather conditions are so poor that we must cancel student transportation, and/or close schools to preserve the safety of students and staff.

The decision to cancel transportation and/or close schools is not taken lightly; a variety of factors are considered when making this choice. To learn more about how these decisions are made, please go to https://www.dsbn.org/inclementweather. Information about transportation delays and cancellations are posted to https://portal.nsts.ca/Cancellations.aspx.

Reporting Student Absence

Parents must call 1-866-606-5567 to report a student absence. Please do not call or email the school office or teachers. There is also a School Messenger app that you can download that allows you to record student absences.

Attendance Procedures - School Messenger/Safe Arrival

To re-establish a connection for the new school year, parents must logout of the School Messenger app, and log back in. This will ensure the app works correctly with our new office software. After logging back in, if your email does not match what is in our data, you will be prompted to contact the school to verify your email address.

Carleton School is now using the SafeArrival program for attendance. With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance using any of these 3 convenient methods:

  • Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence

  • Use the SafeArrival website, at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence

  • Call the toll-free number 1-866-606-5567 to report an absence using the automated phone system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.  Future absences can be reported at any time.

Student Prevalent Medical Condition

If your child has a Prevalent Medical Condition (Asthma, Anaphylaxis, Diabetes, Epilepsy, or other) for which the school will need to have a Plan of Care, please complete the applicable form at the link below and return it to the school with your child as soon as possible. Remember, these must be completed at the start of each school year. There is also a form for students that require school staff to provide oral or topical medication.

Entry to Schoolyard

We strongly encourage parents to send children to school just in time for the entry bell at 8:55 a.m. When students arrive at school, they will have to remain in a designated area of the school yard. There will be no use of shareable equipment (e.g., basketballs, soccerballs, skipping ropes, etc.). The designated area for each class will be shown to them on the first day of school. These areas will be outlined on the schoolyard as well.

The Kindergarten students will enter at the gate to the playground as usual. Older siblings will also be allowed to enter through the gate if necessary. Please do not remain in the drop off area so that other families can get to the gate to drop off their child(ren). If you have a child in Kindergarten as well as children in other grades, they can all be dropped off at the Kindergarten gate and picked up at the Kindergarten gate.

All students in grades 1 - 8 will use the paved path beside the parking lot to enter the playground. Students are reminded not to cut through the parking lot, use the sidewalk and path!

With many young students, pick up and drop off times can get very chaotic! Please remember to park only in marked parking spaces. Do not block the entrance and exit to the parking lot, and do not stop in the middle of the parking lot to allow students in or out of the vehicle. Also, please do not leave your engines running while waiting, we want to keep the air as clean as possible for everyone.

Letting students walk to school is great exercise!

Tips to remember when walk or biking:

  • Look left, right and left again when crossing the street
  • Never run or dart out into the street or cross between parked cars
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them and watch out for cars that are turning or backing up
  • It’s always best to walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible
  • Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks

No Food or Drink on the Schoolyard

We have a policy of no food or drink on the schoolyard at Carleton School. This helps us to keep the yard litter free as well as preventing bees and other insects and animals from being attracted to the playground. This policy applies to students arriving at school in the morning with food and drink. Students are encouraged to finish their food and drinks at the place of purchase. They will be directed off the school grounds to finish these. (Special school events are the exception to this rule.)
